John Hayes believed deeply in community, opportunity, and the power of education to change lives.

John’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident on January 17, 2023, but his passion for service and advocacy continues to shape the future of countless students and educators in Somerset Independent School District.

John first became connected to the Somerset community through his work developing homes and subdivisions within the district. What began as professional involvement quickly grew into a personal commitment. John recognized the disparity in educational opportunities facing students in one of San Antonio’s most economically disadvantaged areas. Rather than look away, he leaned in determined to make a meaningful difference.

In April 2024, we hosted the first John Hayes Memorial Pickleball Tournament to raise money for this memorial fund. The event was sold out and well attended. Through friends and colleagues like you we were able to raise more than $235,000, of which only 9% went to overhead expenses. We value the funds received by our donors and want to ensure most of it goes towards helping students and teachers. In May 2024, we were honored to give 4 academic scholarships and several teacher grants in Somerset.

81.5% of Somerset ISD students are economically disadvantaged. Over the past three years, the John Hayes Memorial Tournament funds have awarded 13 new scholarships and given 8 teacher grants for programs that have impacted 3,205 students.

The annual John Hayes Memorial Pickleball Tournament is more than a fundraiser. It is a celebration of John’s life, his generosity, and his belief in education as a pathway to opportunity. Each year, the tournament brings together a community united by the desire to continue what John started.

As we plan for the third annual tournament, we hope you will join us in continuing to change the lives of teachers and students in the Somerset school district and honor the memory of John Hayes. Whether you are a pickleball enthusiast or want to be part of the celebration, we invite you to play or attend the finals match at 6:00pm on March 29, 2026, followed by a cocktail party and presentation. It’s going to be a great time and a wonderful opportunity to honor John’s legacy.
